SEMIOTICS AND INTERPRETATION


 Semiotics is the study of signs, symbols, and cultural representations across various mediums, from language and branding to warning signs and emojis. In film, semiotics plays a crucial role in shaping narratives, themes, and character portrayals, using visual and auditory cues to convey deeper meanings. However, the interpretation of these signs is highly subjective, influenced by an audience’s cultural background, experiences, and personal beliefs.


This subjectivity often leads to controversies in film interpretation. What one viewer sees as a harmless or even positive symbol, another may perceive as problematic or controversial. For example, the golden arches of McDonald’s might represent joy and nostalgia to a child, while a health-conscious viewer may associate them with corporate greed or unhealthy consumerism.
